Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions people ask most.

Is Holy PDF free?

Yes. The tools of the site are free, with no hidden limit and no watermark.

Do I need an account?

No. Open a tool, drop your files, get the result.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. They are processed in your browser, on your device, and never leave it. How it works, and how to check it.

Which browsers?

Recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on a computer as on a phone. The site needs JavaScript and WebAssembly, which all these browsers offer.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in the phone’s browser, with no app to install. With a very large file, a phone can be slower than a computer: all the work happens on the device.

Is there a maximum size?

The site sets no size limit. The engine works in the browser’s memory, which has its own limit: a very large file can fail, especially on a phone. On a recent computer, merging ten files of 50 pages takes less than two seconds.

Is a signature made with Holy PDF legally valid?

Sign places an image of your signature in the PDF: a simple electronic signature. It holds for everyday documents, when the parties accept it. It is not a qualified signature under the eIDAS regulation, and it does not replace one where the law requires it.

Is there an app?

Not yet. A desktop app for Mac and Windows, then Linux, is in the works, built on the site’s code, with the same promise: your files stay on your device. See the apps.

Is the code of Holy PDF open?

Yes. The site’s code is published under the AGPL-3.0-or-later licence on GitHub. You can also check the promise without reading a line of code. Open the Network tab of your browser’s developer tools, run a tool, and watch: no request carries your file.
